5. Massimiliano Allegri - €1.03b
The former Juventus manager is currently taking a hiatus, but there is no dearth of suitors for him. Massimiliano Allegri is another former footballer who successfully made the transition to management after his playing days.
The Italian started his career with Aglianese in Serie C2, now known as Lega Pro Seconda Divisione, in 2004. He worked through Serie C2 and C1 before finally making an appearance in the Serie A for the first time as a manager with Cagliari in May 2008. He would remain at the Islanders until April 2010, when he was sacked despite a decent mid-table run. Allegri would not remain without a job for long, though, because AC Milan came calling in the summer of 2010.
At San Siro, the Italian immediately caught the eye, winning the Serie A in his first season. He also won the Supercoppa Italiana in 2011. For his first 3 seasons, Allegri was very impressive, finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively and making his presence felt in the cups as well as the Champions League. He spent €191.9m on 35 players and notable among his signings during this time were Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Mario Balotelli, and Robinho. However, in his 4th season, Milan’s performances hit rock bottom and the Italian was sacked in January 2014.
In the summer of 2014, Allegri replaced the outgoing Antonio Conte as the Juventus manager and thus began his most successful spell as a manager. In his 5 years during the helm at Turin, the Italian won 5 Serie A titles, 4 Coppa Italia trophies and 2 Supercoppa Italiana trophies. He also reached the final of the UEFA Champions League twice. He made wise investments in the market and bought 50 players, spending €805.7. It was during this time that he lashed out €117 on Cristiano Ronaldo, who was the biggest purchase of his career.
To date, Massimiliano Allegri has spent €1.03b on 96 players and has won 14 trophies. He is the 5th highest spending manager in the world at the moment.
