5 players who have a stellar club career but have failed for country

Football is a sport, with a schedule dominated by club football throughout the calendar year. In between, there are international breaks where players are obligated to represent their national team if called up.

It’s not easy balancing the two and it can get quite stressful and tiring to play so many games in a short space of time. Nevertheless, there are players who are able to keep up their levels of performance throughout that grueling period.

After all, it is a matter of pride to represent your country. But for these players, there was something holding them back and they didn't quite make their mark in international football

5) Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard is a Liverpool icon. The man would do anything for the team he loves so much. It’s a shame he never won a league title with his boyhood club, but he did enjoy Champions League success.

Gerrard made 504 appearances for the Reds scoring 120 times and is responsible for producing some of the most important goals in their history. But when it comes to the England national team we saw a very different Gerrard.

The swashbuckling midfielder played in four World Cups for England with the national team failing to impress in any of those tournaments. The team they had in that decade was termed as the Golden Generation, full of stars like Beckham, Scholes among others.

But for some reason, they disappointed their die hard fans almost every time. Gerrard was probably one of the biggest names in that squad, with a lot expected from the free-scoring midfielder but he only managed only 21 goals in 114 appearances.
