Adam Maher cools down Arsenal, Man City move
Adam Maher, the teenage sensation, has spent his entire career with AZ Alkmaar and has garnered significant attention from Premier League clubs. He has already scored 14 goals in his short career but is destined to score aplenty with his raw potential.
The 19-year-old scored on his debut in a Europe League encounter against Bate Borisov, becoming the youngest player to score a goal for a Dutch football club. His fine performances for the Dutch outfit have intensified speculation that the playmaker would move on to bigger things in the summer.
However, Maher signed a new lucrative contract last October, having been convinced by the Board to stay at the club in order to continue his development. But a big-money offer from one of European top clubs would be too hard to resist for Alkmaar, who are expected to sell their star asset for €10 million in the summer.
There has been major interest from Premier League duo Arsenal and Manchester City, and even Chelsea and Spurs have been linked with the midfielder in the past. However, Maher has indicated his desire to remain in Netherlands for at least another two years before pitting his skill against some of European’s finest.
He has signalled his attention to play for either PSV or Ajax over Arsenal or City. According to Metro, the starlet revealed, “I have already said that I do not want to go [to England]. I want a good stay in the Netherlands, at least another two to three years. Last summer and last winter I indicated I want to go to PSV, but I can also play for Ajax too.”
This has dealt Arsenal a major blow, who are already reeling from the loss of Diaby to a knee injury for 9 months. However, they could turn their attention into luring Spanish hotshot Isco to Emirates, but could baulk at his buy-out clause of £30 million.
Man City, meanwhile, were eyeing Maher as a replacement for Nasri, who is expected to leave Etihad for either Marseille or Monaco. The Premier League champions are rumoured to be in the market for Cavani or Falcao, as a direct replacement for Balotelli.
