AFC Cup: I respect Trevor Morgan’s achievements – East Bengal coach Marcos Falopa

Marcos Falopa of East Bengal

The shadow of Trevor Morgan’s achievements still loom large over Marcos Falopa’s East Bengal ahead of their two-legged AFC Cup quarter-final against Indonesia’s Semen Padang and the Brazilian was full of respect for his predecessor.

“I respect his achievements but the target has been from day one to do better than that. Of course we have taken certain aspects from Morgan’s style but each coach has his own ways and we have looked for the right balance,” he said.

East Bengal’s preparations for the two-legged tie hasn’t been ideal as they have only had a couple of local league matches in terms of competitive action and Falopa admitted that the preparation could have been better.

“Preparation is never enough. We tried to play some friendly matches against international club sides but I understand it was difficult for the club to organise the same. But on a positive note we have had some good training sessions with great spirit from the players. We have also benefitted from the return of quality national team players. It is going to be an interesting game,” he said.

While the quarter-final tie is undoubtedly East Bengal’s biggest game in nine years, it is even more special for Falopa as progression to the semis could make him an instant hit among the supporters and the Brazilian acknowledged the magnitude of the contest.

“Of course. It is a very special game since it’s an international match. Our home fans can make a big difference but it’s important the support doesn’t go over the line, like I don’t want bottles to be thrown into the ground. We will give everything but it is important to remember that both teams are desperate to win,” Falopa said.
