Ajax beat PSV in top of the table clash
The Hague, April 15 (IANS):
In a possible championship decider, Ajax Amsterdam beat PSV Eindhoven 3-2 to move closer to the Dutch first division football title, with four match rounds remaining.
PSV were three points behind league leaders Ajax before the match Sunday and needed a win to take control of the Eredivisie title. However, Ajax controlled the match from the start and created chances through forward Viktor Fischer, reports Xinhua.
Ajax took the lead in the 33rd minute when striker Kolbeinn Sigthorsson found the net. Two minutes from half-time, PSV came back into the match after a mistake by Christian Eriksen.
Eriksen made up for his mistake by putting Ajax in front again after a fine solo effort in the 52nd minute. Although Ajax remained the better team, PSV managed to bounce back again. A free-kick by Dries Mertens hit the post and Lens converted the rebound.
Ajax sored the decider in the 77th minute. Substitute Derk Boerrigter profited from miscommunication between PSV sub Erik Pieters and goalkeeper Boy Waterman to make it 3-2.
Thanks to the victory, Ajax now are on 66 points from 30 matches. Vitesse, who drew 3-3 against Roda JC Kerkrade Saturday, follow five points behind, and PSV and Feyenoord are both six points behind.
“It looks very good,” Ajax midfielder Eriksen told Dutch TV channel Eredivisie Live afterwards. “We have now distanced ourselves from the rest, but we still have to play four finals.”
