Ana Ivanovic marries Bastian Schweinsteiger

The pair had been dating for two years

Former World No. 1 Ana Ivanovic recently married her long-term boyfriend, German footballer Bastian Schweinsteiger, in Venice, Italy. The French Open winner had been dating the midfielder since 2014.

31-year-old Schweinsteiger is currently signed to Manchester United, and was part of the German side’s World Cup victory in 2014. 28-year-old Ivanovic first found glory on the tennis circuit as a junior, and in 2008 hit her stride, making the finals of the Australian Open before winning her first and only Grand Slam title at Roland Garros that year.

The Serbian player, who is currently at 25th on the WTA rankings, has since seen a decline in form, and most recently crashed out of Wimbledon in the first round; she also had a similar exit at the French Open, the venue of her grand slam glory.

Earlier this year, she also decided against representing the Serbian national tennis team, which federation officials in her country have described a loss of “one of [our] strongest players."

Schweinsteiger, meanwhile, captains his national side, which recently finished at the semi-finals of the Euro 2016 Championships in France, losing 0-2 to the home side, which finished runners-up at the tournament to Portugal.

German coach Joachim Low and Schweinsteiger’s teammate, Thomas Muller, were among the attendees at the wedding, which also saw recent Wimbledon winner Andy Murray and women’s singles finalist Angelique Kerber attend. Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness was also among those at Venice City Hall, where the wedding was held.

Ivanovic is the second WTA star in recent weeks to marry; she follows Aegon International champion Dominika Cibulkova, who married her own long-term partner last week after fearing the wedding would be postponed due to her Wimbledon run.
