FIFA World Cup 2014: André Schürrle confident about Germany's winning ambition
André Schürrle is confident that Germany can shed their “bridesmaids” tag and go onto win the World Cup in Brazil. The Germans who face Brazil in the Semi Final on Tuesday will be looking to reach their first World Cup final since losing in 2002 to Brazil, which coincidentally is the only previous competitive meeting between the two sides.
Schürrle revealed his excitement about the clash with the hosts and the opportunity to play against his club team-mates in Oscar, Willian and the now PSG-bound David Luiz. About the experience, Schürrle said: “For me, it will be cool to play against my Brazilian friends from Chelsea. And, of course, if somebody asks me how to play against them, I’m here to help.”
Although this is Germany’s fourth consecutive World Cup semi-finals, they are yet to win a tournament since 1990, a record the current side are keen to put an end to. When asked whether the German side is ready to win the World Cup in Brazil, Schürrle said: “We have this feeling, we are really close and you feel that everybody wants this. We have a big opportunity now to win the title. The last years, we were close. Now, we want this so much.”
He also added that the best thing about his side is their winning mentality. “The best thing about this team is that we win. We fight and we give everything. We’ve had some tight matches but we’ve deserved to win every game we have won. It’s not just luck or the DNA of the players.”
