Andros Townsend renews four-year Spurs deal worth £15k-a-week
Andros Townsend’s memorable week reaches summit after he renewed a four-year deal with Tottenham Hotspur. The winger was set to have his £6,000-a-week deal more than doubled to one worth £15,000 per week.
The club announced on Friday that the English winger had resigned a contract.
But Spurs manager, Villas-Boas cautioned the player by stating: ‘When you get public and media recognition you have to tolerate it, he has to step up his game. I suppose Jack Wilshere falls into that category.
‘He is a great product of English football.
Sometimes they are chased, sometimes a victim and sometimes guilty. But at these moments you have to stay strong with your personality and continue to perform for club and country.’
Townsend would keep his first team place, when Tottenahm meets Aston Villa today. Although he would face serious competitions from fellow midfielders, Erik Lamela, Nacer Chadli, Aaron Lennon and in-form Gylfi Sigurdsson for a starting spot
Villas-Boas further said: ‘People are going to be more worried about him, he will be in the public eye more and they will demand more from his performances. I expect him to respond.’
The manager expected Townsend to improve under fierce competition within the squad.
