Angel Di Maria's form slump not unusual: Tata Martino
Angel Di Maria’s poor form in the recent matches for Manchester United is normal and is not a big cause of worry, according to Argentina’s national coach Gerardo Martino. The 26-year-old was bought by Manchester United earlier this year for a fee of £59.7 million from Real Madrid.
Di Maria is one of the top players in the world
Speaking ahead of his side’s friendly against Portugal at Old Trafford, The 51-year-old called Di Maria one of the top footballers in the world and said it is usual for a player to go through a slump in form after a good start at a new club.
"I have to say that Angel is one of the very top players in world football ”. he said.
"His start was exceptional and the fact that generally when players go to a new club and have to get used to a new league, a new team, a different style of football and different team-mates”. he added.
"I think the form that he is showing now is possibly more typical of a player going to a new club than the very first few games when he burst onto the scene and did so well." Martino said.
One of his big strengths is his versatility: Martino
He also went to praise the mid-fielder’s versatility in his play.
"With regards to his position, I would say that Angel is the type of player who can play a number of different roles expertly”. he said.
"You only have to look a few seasons back when he played on the right side for Real Madrid and in the season just gone, he featured more on the inside-left, in a free role”. he added.
"Obviously, in the World Cup, he did very well when he played wide left so really, in terms of positioning, he can adapt to anywhere where the manager asks him to play." The Argentian said.
