Argentina and Ecuador will square off at the NRG Stadium, Texas, in the first quarterfinal tie in the 2024 Copa America on Thursday. The Argentines booked their spot in the last eight as Group A winners, having garnered maximum points from three games.

Their final group stage fixture saw them claim maximum points with a routine 2-0 victory. Lautaro Martinez scored a second-half brace to inspire his nation to victory.

Ecuador, meanwhile, finalized their group stage campaign with a goalless draw against Mexico. The stalemate saw them qualify on goal difference, having finished level on four points with El Tri in Group B.

Thursday's game will be a re-enactment of the Copa America quarterfinal three years ago when Argentina went all the way to end their 28-year trophy drought.

Lionel Messi's fitness is a major cause for concern as the Inter Miami man was rested against Peru owing to a hamstring issue. However, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner is back in training and could play a part against the Ecuadorians.

The winner of this tie will face either Venezuela or Canada in the semifinal.
