Arjen Robben rules out Manchester United switch as van Gaal gears up for Old Trafford stint
Louis Van Gaal will return from Brazil to Manchester, but not with Arjen Robben as the Bayern Munich winger ruled out a switch to Manchester United. Robben, who helped the Dutch national side to their first-ever third place finish in a World Cup stated that the will not follow his national team manager to United.
Speaking to Dutch broadcaster NOS, the 30 year-old winger who had a previous stint in England with Chelsea, revealed Van Gaal wanted him at Old Trafford, but said that although he shares a “special bond” with the coach, he will not join the Red Devils.
Robben said: “I have a special bond with him. He is the most important coach in my career,” However he also added that: “[Moving to United] is not an option though. I will stay at Bayern Munich.”
Robben was a revelation in Brazil and was even shortlisted for the player of the tournament award. His addition would’ve solved United’s wing woes. Unfortunately for the Red Devils, they might have to look elsewhere now that Robben is unavailable.
Meanwhile, Louis van Gaal has expressed excitement at the prospect of joining Manchester United.
"I hope the group in Manchester will become like this one," said Van Gaal.
"We have to sing from the same hymn sheet."
"I hope at Manchester United I can do my best," he said.
"I will do my best. Whether that's enough for the fans I will wait and see, but I genuinely hope that will be the case."
