Arsenal 6-1 Southampton: The Saints ain't coming

Arsenal were brilliant again, in their fourth fixture of the season versus Premier League new boys Southampton. After ending their initial goal drought against Liverpool, the club were clinical in a 6-1 win.

Arsene Wenger dropped Olivier Giroud to the bench, with Podolski starting up front with Gervinho, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Santi Cazorla. The incisive Podolski has been a hit amongst the Emirates faithful with his persistent attitude going forward, and trademark power long shots. Wojciech Szczesny returned in goal after the international break from an injury niggle and young Coquelin was also given a start in place of Abou Diaby, who was out with a muscular injury.

Arsenal took the lead with an own goal from Jos Hooiveld, after some brilliant movements within the box from Keiran Gibbs and Lukas Podolski. The lead was doubled in the 31st minute with an expert free kick goal from the German again. Gervinho trebled Arsenal’s lead followed by another blunder by Nathaniel Clyne.

The Saints seemed to gain some momentum with a goal from Daniel Fox around the half time mark.

The second half saw Southampton gain some momentum with the introduction of star signing, Gaston Ramirez. But Gervinho’s second goal and Theo Walcott’s first of the season hammered the final nail into the coffin.

Arsenal’s season finally seems to be on track, with the north London side shrugging of their one man team tag, coupled with a solid defense, with credit due to new assistant manager, Steve Bould.

The real test lies ahead with away fixtures against Montpelier and league winners Manchester City in the upcoming week.
