Arsenal Transfer Rumour: Gunners looking to bring in Inter Milan forward Mauro Icardi
Arsenal have been rumoured to express their interest in Inter Milan’s 23-year-old striker and captain Mauro Icardi. As mentioned by Metro, Icardi’s wife Wanda Nara who is also his agent, reportedly claimed that the Gunners have shown their interest in the 23-year-old Argentine.
Nara also claimed that Arsenal’s London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Spanish club Atletico Madrid are also seeking his services. The transfer rumours to Arsenal are fresh off the boat and it is highly unlikely that the move will take place anytime soon if at all.
Icardi after being named captain for the Nerazzurri in the 2015/16 season has been in terrific form, scoring 16 goals and providing 4 assists with 57 shots on goal. The Argentine is a strong player with good aerial ability, finishing skills and can also hold the ball in situations against defenders.
The striker who was left out from the Argentine squad for the Copa America Centenario has reportedly asked for a new contract from the board to stay at Inter.
Nara has revealed that she was promised a renewal from Inter and according to her, the club has assured that they have indicated Icardi wasn’t for sale while talking to other clubs. She was quoted as saying Icardi wants to stay at Inter, but there were certain promises from the club which have to be fulfilled, referring to the contract renewal.
The player’s wife also claimed that Napoli and Roma have also shown interest in the striker who apparently has no release clause in his contract.
The rumour is likely to stay a rumour because the Nerazzurri chief Piero Auilio in a press conference has confirmed that Icardi is not for sale. It is likely to be another disappointment for the Gunners. They have previously been linked to big names like Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema which ended in dead ends as well.
If the deal happens and Icardi does end up at Arsenal he could be the most expensive signing for Arsenal after Mesut Ozil who was signed from Real Madrid for £42.5 million. Icardi being a fast paced attacker would be an interesting addition to the lineup which already features the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Joel Campbell, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The Gunners have already had a failed attempt at signing Jaime Vardy from Leicester City. Their London rivals Chelsea having signed Willian to a new contract and Spurs have completed a move to the Netherland striker Vincent Janssen have strengthened their attack. Arsenal are yet to match up to their rivals. However, signing Icardi, can change all that.
