Arsenal's Wojciech Szczesny has officially completed a loan move to Roma

Since the arrival of Petr Cech at Arsenal, there have been constant rumour of either Wojciech Szczesny or David Ospina leaving the club. The Gunners have now confirmed on their official website that the Polish goalkeeper will spend the season on loan in Italy with Roma.

Szczesny made 29 appearances in all competitions for the North London club last season. He shared the ‘Golden Glove’ in the 2013/14 season with the man who replaced him at Arsenal – Petr Cech. However, he had a disappointing spell last season as he was relegated to the bench during the latter half of the season with the Colombian keeper Ospina coming to the fore.

The move seemed justified from manager Arsene Wenger’s point of view as according to Sqwawka, Szczesny made more errors during the season than he had clean sheets. Not a statistic you would want to be associated with your first -choice goalkeeper.

The Polish custodian joined the club in 2006 but only made his debut in 2009 at the age of 19. Now, at 25 years of age, this seemingly is his chance to live up to the promise that he has shown all along.

On completing the move, the shot-stopper told Roma TV: “I’ve come here to win games and trophies with AS Roma and I believe that the team is strong enough to do so.

“I think there’s great potential. I know the faces of the players and I know their names, so hopefully I will settle in very quickly.”

Arsenal to face Chelsea in Community Shield tie

Wojciech Szczesny left the club on loan ahead of Arsenal’s Community Shield match against Chelsea on August 2. Having won the FA Cup last time around as well, Arsenal won the 2014 Community Shield against Manchester City and the Polish keeper was a part of both successes.

This season, Petr Cech could square off against his former employers as Arsenal will look to make it  2 in a row.

The Gunners will have to do it without Alexis Sanchez as he will be joining the team later having taken part in a grueling but victorious campaign in the Copa America. Danny Welbeck is also set to miss out on the game due to injury.
