Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal crashes Ferrari; arrested for drunk driving
The Juventus star has been detained by the Chilean police for driving under the influence of alcohol after he crashed his red Ferrari in the outskirts of Santiago. Vidal escaped any serious injuries and was taken to the San Luis de Buin hospital for treatment.
He was seen leaving the hospital with police on his way to the station for further questioning, and will face a judge today. The 28-year-old midfielder was driving with his wife and was on his way back from a casino when he crashed his vehicle on a highway south of the Chilean capital.
Chilean national police chief Colonel Ricardo Gonzalez confirmed, "The driver of the red vehicle was under the influence of alcohol."
This is how the scene of the crash looked:
The Chilean midfielder had starred in Chile's 3-3 draw with Mexico on Monday in which he scored twice. He is currently the top scorer in the 2015 Copa America with 3 goals in 2 matches. The entire team had been given the afternoon off and were told to return home by 11 pm on Tuesday night.
"Unfortunately I was involved in a traffic accident," Vidal wrote on his Twitter account, in Spanish. "Luckily we are all well and calm. Thanks for worrying."
Jose Sulantay, a former manager for Chile U-20s denounced the entire episode. Speaking to CNN Chile, he said, "It's very serious to let this happen right in the middle of the Copa America. This kind of stuff doesn't happen [when they're playing] in Europe. I don't understand coach Jorge Sampaoli and I don't understand Vidal."
Chile play their third and final group game against Bolivia in the capital on Friday.
