Atlético Madrid sign goalkeeper Jan Oblak from Benfica for £12.6 million

Have Atlético signed the perfect replacement for Courtois?

Atlético Madrid have signed Benfica’s Jan Oblak as a replacement for the outbound Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois.  The Spanish club have paid £12.6m to secure the services of the 21-year-old Slovenian who was named the best keeper in Portugal last season. Oblak joins the club on a six-year deal subject to a medical.

Oblak won the domestic treble with Benfica last season and was an integral part of the side’s run to the Europa League final in which they lost to Spanish side Sevilla. His performances have caught the eye of several leading European clubs but it is Atlético who have managed to get their hands on this promising Slovenian shot-stopper.

Atletico’s reaction on signing Oblak

Sporting director José Luis Pérez Caminero was pleased with his signing and said that Oblak "Is a goalkeeper with a great quality and future, who will contribute a lot due to his enormous qualities."

His signing means that Miguel Angel Moya, who was signed from Getafe recently, will have a fight on his hands as he bids to claim the Number one jersey.
