Barcelona news: Luis Suarez confirms contract talks are ongoing with La Liga champions

Luis Suarez has been in top form for Barcelona again this season

Reports emerging from Spain have confirmed that Luis Suarez’s commitment to the Catalan club is set for a five-year extension. According to various reports, Luis Suarez has been the centre of ongoing contract negotiations as Barcelona look to tie down the “S” of the MSN trio.

It was only last month that Luis Suarez was heard telling the press how he would love to retire at Barcelona after he being presented with the Golden Shoe award.

At the time of the ceremony, when the striker was asked about his current club Barcelona, he responded, “I suffered a lot to make it here [Barca], and I want to enjoy it and continue fighting to complete my objectives, which is to win titles. I would love to retire here, but that obliges you to stay at the top level for your whole career. But I'm not thinking about that now. There are only a few privileged enough to retire here."

The striker’s splendid form for the Blaugrana forced a rethink for the Barcelona board that were more than willing to tie down Suarez on an improved contract. Indeed, his contributions over the past couple of seasons have urged the Board to improve his salary and this increase is indicative of the Uruguayan’s impact at the club.

Tying down important players

The Uruguayan whose agent is the same as that of Pep Guardiola recently indicated his intention of finishing his career at the Nou Camp. Ahead of the national team’s World Cup qualifier against Ecuador, the striker quizzed about his contract renewal to which the striker replied in his understated manner, “Everything is on the right path. We're finalising the talks. I'm at the club I always wanted to be in.”

Having joined from Liverpool in the summer of 2014, the Uruguayan has been instrumental for the Blaugrana in racking up titles.

In recent weeks, Barcelona has moved swiftly to tie down first team players such as Neymar, Mascherano and Busquets. Although Luis Enrique has stalled contract talks regarding his extension until the end of the season, the club has ensured that player’s futures are settled.

Suarez, a controversial figure, in recent times, has been more disciplined since his arrival at the Nou Camp. The striker who courted controversies ranging from racist abuse to biting the opponent in the Premier League, in fact, has been a sober figure when compared to his past clubs.

However, this hasn’t prevented the striker from losing his edge when it comes to his competitive streak. Indeed this competitive streak is the reason for the striker managing to score 40 league goals last season as Barca won the La Liga.
