Bayern Munich move up in German Cup
Berlin, Aug 21 – Bayern Munich have defeated second division side Regensburg 4-0, thanks to a brace by striker Mario Mandzukic, in the first round of German Cup (DFB Pokal) football.
The Bavarians did not show any weakness considering that six Bundesliga teams were already eliminated from the cup by lower league sides.
Bayern opened the scoring in the 31st minute Monday, French midfielder Franck Ribery dribbling into the penalty area to assist recent arrival Mario Mandzukic to slot home from close range, Xinhua reports.
After the break another of Bayern’s new arrivals substitute midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri doubled the lead when he curled the ball from 20 metres into top right.
The 2-0 deficit took the wind out of Regensburg’s sails an Mario Mandzukic struck again, this time Shaqiri helping him out in the 80th minute.
Finally, substitute Claudio Pizzaro volleyed home following a fast build up by Shaqiri.
In the other matches Monday, Chemnitz lost 3-0 to Dresden, Union Berlin sealed a 1-0 win over extra time and Sandhausen defeated Cottbus 3-0.
