Bayern Munich in talks with Real Madrid for Xabi Alonso
Bayern Munich have confirmed an agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of Xabi Alonso and he is all set to travel to Germany to undergo a medical on Thursday.
Bayern Munich were keen to add an extra midfielder following the injuries to both Javi Martinez and Thiago Alcantara and believe that Xabi Alonso will be a good value addition to their squad.
The club was rumoured to be signing Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Iturraspe this week, but it has now been confirmed that it would be Xabi Alonso making the move to the Bundesliga Champions following the completion of his medical on Thursday.
Jan- Christian Dreesen, Bayern’s executive board member said in a press conference, "It is correct that we have been in talks with Real Madrid and Xabi Alonso. We have basically reached an agreement. The player will arrive in Munich later on Thursday to undergo his medical."
Earlier this year Alonso had signed a new contract with Real Madrid until the summer of 2016, but his place in midfield is not assured as Carlo Ancelotti has favoured new signings Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez, alongwith Luka Modric in a three-man midfield to start the season.
After having made 200 official appearances for Real Madrid, the Spanish midfielder had announced his decision to retire from international football for Spain early this week. He started his professional career with Real Sociedad and has also played for Eibar and Liverpool, and later on joined Real Madrid in 2009.
