Belgium will look to avoid the inauspicious prospect of an early exit from Euro 2024 as they take on a buoyant Romania on Saturday in Group E. Domenico Tedesco's men were dealt a 1-0 loss by Slovakia in their group stage opener while Romania picked up a surprising and impressive 3-0 victory over Ukraine.

Belgium would have walked out onto the pitch against Slovakia on Monday, firmly believing that their awful streak of misfortune in major tournaments was about to be snapped.

But it took merely seven minutes for Slovakia to put a dent in the Red Devils' hopes with Ivan Schranz getting on the scoresheet for Francesco Calzona's side.

Tedesco's men failed to put away their chances and ended the night as victims of the biggest upset of the opening matchday of Euro 2024. It also marked the first-ever loss for Tedesco as Belgium's manager.

They will need to come up with a strong response on Saturday against a Romanian unit who will fancy their chances after a strong showing against Ukraine. Serhiy Rebrov's men benefitted from two mistakes by Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin to secure a thoroughly impressive victory.

Romania's last win at the Euros came against England all the way back in 2000. They crashed out of the group stage in the 2008 and 2016 editions without tasting victory.

Having secured that emphatic 3-0 win, Romania are now well-placed to finish atop Group E and one win from their next two matches should see them progress to the knockout stages.

This is a tough game to call. Romania and Belgium did very well in the lead-up to the tournament but have started their respective campaigns in contrasting ways. Lunin's awful performance greatly aided Romania's 3-0 win in goal for Ukraine.

Things are unlikely to play out that fortuitously for them against Belgium. Tedesco's men did cook up a healthy amount of chances in their loss against Slovakia and if their attackers can up their game, Belgium should be able to get a much-needed win here.
