PSG & Barcelona readying bids for Chelsea superstar

David Luiz’s Chelsea career could be coming to an end this season, with French newspaper L’Equipe reporting that Paris Saint-Germain are readying an end of season bid for the Brazilian centre back.

Luiz has struggled to nail down a regular starting berth in his favoured centre back position this season and is attracting interest from a number of European sides.

Barcelona have perennially been linked with Luiz over the past few seasons and the January arrivals of Kurt Zouma and Nemanja Matic could hasten an exit that has seemed inevitable since Jose Mourinho took over the side.

Mourinho has often insisted that he has no wish to sell Luiz, but could be tempted to cash in on the 26-year-old in order to fund further signings within the realms of financial fair play rules.

Luiz has played started just 13 of Chelsea’s 24 Premier League games this season, across both centre-back and central midfield roles. However he has failed to make either position his own and now faces the prospect of increased competition for the roles. Gary Cahill has been preferred as a partner to John Terry this season, whilst new signing Zouma will be competing for the centre back role next season.

The Brazilian impressed in midfield last season and reprised the role in the recent win over Manchester City. However this season was his best chance of staking a claim for the slot on a full time basis, with neither Marco Van Ginkel nor Matic in the squad for the first half of the season, and he has failed to take it, opening the door on a move to PSG.

The French giants are reportedly willing to offer more money for Luiz than Barcelona, who are reported to have offered £20.5 million, putting them in pole position to end Luiz’s three-year stay at Stamford Bridge.

Luiz has the longest average pass length (25m) of any outfield Chelsea player this season.
