0-3 down to 4-3 up! Dortmund overturn incredible scoreline in Europa League qualifier
Borussia Dortmund won their Europa League qualifier first leg against Odds Ballklubb 4-3 after going down 0-3 in the opening 22 minutes.
The visitors, who travelled without Marco Reus, Jakub Blaszczykowski and Lukasz Piszczek were stunned by the Norwegian side who they scored three goals by completely opening up Borussia Dortmund. Goals from Samuelsen in the 1st minute, Nordkvelle in the 19th minute and Ruud in the 22nd minute left Thomas Tuchel biting his nails and trying to figure out what he's to do to get his team back in the game.
Dortmund then hit the post, thanks to a great strike from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, with the goalkeeper completely misjudging the ball. However, Gabon Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, began proceedings by poking in a ball after the goalkeeper failed to hold on to it after a thunderous strike from Ilkay Gundagon in the 34th minute.
This gave Dortmund some hope and 2 minutes into the second half, Shinji Kagawa scored an acrobatic goal into the bottom right corner leaving Odd only one goal ahead of the black and yellows.
Two goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan sealed an epic comeback for the visitors who, surely, wouldn't have expected such a fight from the Norwegian club. Tuchel had a roller-coaster ride in the dugout with his side hitting the woodwork thrice wasting plenty of clear-cut chances. But probably the worst of the lot was in the 67th minute when Aubameyang failed to slot in an open goal with the ball getting entangled in his legs.
After the game, Mats Hummels said, "At first it was like a bad film. You shouldn’t start a game with such a weak performance. It was a nightmare start but we fought back. It was clear to us that we could still win despite being 3-0 down. Luckily we managed to bring it back to 3-2 after half-time. At the end it was annoying that we didn’t score a fifth or sixth goal. A bigger victory would have been well-earned."
