Borussia Dortmund generates record profits

UEFA Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund have announced a record profit of €53.3M ($71M) and a turnover of €305M ($408M) during the 2011-12 fiscal year.

The club was on the verge of hitting rock bottom on 2005 and was helped by financial support from rivals Bayern Munich to stay afloat. The club showed substantial transformation since then, winning back to back titles and establishing their name in Europe.

The revenue rise of the club was boosted heavily by the sales of Ivan Perisic to Wolfsburg and Mario Gotze to Bayern Munich.

“I don’t think there has ever been a profit as big as that. Like in the past year, we were able to synchronize sporting and financial success,” said Hans-Joachim Watzke, Dortmund CEO.

The club’s wage bill also rose from €74.5 million to €99.8 million. However, the cub director has claimed that the club is now virtually debt free.
