Borussia Dortmund: Marco Reus- Der Magier

Once anonymous in the Bundesliga for an almost unknown team, now the “German Magician”, Marco Reus, has quickly established himself as one of Europe’s hottest attacking talents and has since sealed himself a  £14.7m to Borussia Dortmund. Set to start at the Euros, let’s take a look at the player – his skills and his value to both club and country. The future is bright for Germany’s resident little magician.

The (then) 20 year old winger, Reus joined Borussia Monchengladbach in 2009 and whilst he didn’t shine at first, he has made a gradual impact to the side.

In his first season in the Bundesliga, he notched up 35 first team appearances with 10 goals and 4 assists and helped his team dodge relegation in their first year of the top tier in German football. His consistency in appearances continued through to the 2010/2011 season as he made another 35 appearances, now notching up 10 goals and 10 assists.

His progression was clear and (then) manager Michael Frontzeck was open in his admiration for Marco. He was linked away from Monchengladbach towards the end of that season as the team survived the drop to 2.Bundeliga by the skin off their teeth.

Now we enter this season’s campaign, the challenge in which once a relegation fighting team looked at one stage to be genuine title contenders and the fight in which Reus would firmly stamp his name into transfer books of clubs across Europe.

In 37 appearances, “Rolls Reus” capped 21 goals and 10 assists as he moved from the wings to a more (sometimes) more central role.

The rocket attracted attention from clubs such as Manchester City and Real Madrid but found his favoured role to be in his native Germany for newly crowned Bundesliga champions, Borussia Dortmund.

Looking to replace the outgoing Shinji Kagawa, much weight is placed on Reus’ shoulders as he looks to carry Dortmund to back to back league titles for the first time since 1996.

Can he pull through and rise to people’s expectations or will he fall into the void of overhyped flops? His rapid improvement over such a short period of time would allow him to have some degree of flexibility as to where he wishes to play at Dortmund. Whilst he is versatile, it will most likely be up to him as to where he wants to play and rightly so.

I personally feel that he will soon settle in at Dortmund, a common language is shared with the players and staff and as Dortmund without addition will lack depth on the wings and in the centre, he could see himself with a first team spot almost instantly.

With a deal being done so early on in the year, it means that Marco can join Dortmund in their pre-season matches and gain some experience there. For a talent of Marco’s calibre, it shouldn’t take him too long to gel into a squad anywhere.

Those keen on scouting Marco over the summer can of course track him in the Euros. Reus must however expect tough competition for his spot from players such as Mario Gotze, Lukas Podolski and if a more central role is adopted talent such as the likes of Mario Gomez and Miroslav Klose.

Joachim Löw will be the man tasked with that decision, but with silky speed and dribbling skills, accompanied with a good eye for the game and a creative flare, Marco could well nestle himself among Europe’s elite in the near future.
