Bravo Brazil, but loads of work remains until the 2014 FIFA World Cup
Congratulations Brazil on winning the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in style on Sunday night! A great display at the Maracana against the best team in recent years, Spain, but I fear loads of work awaits them off and on the field. In the aftermath of Brazil winning the Confederations Cup, I had the weird feeling that the South Americans in one go had also sealed the 2014 FIFA World Cup title as well and to me it was somewhat back to square one, then it again felt like next year it isn’t about Brazil hosting the FIFA World Cup, but only about them winning it and forget the rest.
A feeling which I honest do not like, then hosting such a big tournament should be an honour to a country as shown by recent hosts South Africa, Germany, Japan and South Korea.
Experienced coach Luiz Felipe Scolari did wonders with Brazil in the tournament as he got a young, rather inexperienced outfit to do the job and keep a rising star like Neymar under control, which earlier coaches have failed to do with the Selecao.
But until the World Cup next summer it is over 11 months to go and there the tournament will be longer, opponents will be better prepared and surely tougher, then a long season and far from perfect preparations showed especially with the performances from Spain and Italy.
There will be other sides like Germany, the Netherlands and Argentina, maybe a surprise element as well in an African or Asian side, who would make the competition at the World Cup tougher than it was this time around and I believe that Spain will surely come back a stronger side to try and defend their title won in South Africa in 2010.
Surely a lot to look forward to and I am not even discussing what all needs to be done on the organisational side…
