Brazil 0-0 Uruguay (2-4 on penalties): Brazil player ratings as the Selecao fall prey in the penalty shootouts | Copa America 2024
Uruguay beat Brazil 4-2 on penalties following a 0-0 draw in regulation time in the quarter-finals of Copa America at the Allegiant Stadium on Saturday, July 6. As expected, the game was all about physicality, with Uruguay coming out on top.
Both sides had one great chance in the opening half, with Brazil's Raphinha being denied by Sergio Rochet and Darwin Nunez squandering one at the other end.
The second half was more or less similar, with both sides scuffling it out for the ball. Uruguay's Nahitan Nandez was shown a red card late in the 74th for a dangerous foul on Rodrygo. The game could not see a winner in the 90 minutes of play and progressed to penalties.
In the ensuing shootout, Federico Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur, Giorgian De Arrascaeta, and Manuel Ugarte scored for Uruguay. The only one to miss was Jose Giminez. Meanwhile, for the Brazilians, Andreas Pereira and Gabriel Martinelli converted their penalties, with Eder Militao and Douglas Luiz missing from the spot as Uruguay won 4-2.
On that note, let's take a look at the player ratings for Brazil.
Brazil Player Ratings
Alisson - 7/10
Alisson was a spectator for the majority of the game and was only called upon during the penalties. The Liverpool goalkeeper did save one penalty from Jose Gimenez.
Danilo - 6.5/10
Danilo looked well in control on the right-hand side and was tidy on the ball. But more was expected from him advancing higher up the pitch.
Eder Militao - 6/10
Eder Militao looks like a shadow of himself ever since returning from injury. Although he was astute defensively, he gave away possession cheaply multiple times. He also missed his penalty in the shootout.
Marquinhos - 5.5/10
Marquinhos struggled for Brazil throughout the game. He never looked comfortable with Darwin Nunez around. The defender kept spraying the ball when in possession, but off it, his scuffles were quite evident.
Guilherme Arana - 7/10
Guilherme Arana played well. The 27-year-old won eight duels, made three recoveries, won one tackle, made two clearances, and completed one dribble. Arana contained the threat of Facundo Pellistri well but left a lot to be desired moving forward.
Joao Gomes - 5.5/10
Joao Gomes tried to use his physicality to win a majority of the duels in the center but could not control the tempo being in the midfield. He could not keep hold of the ball and was not very convincing with his passing.
Bruno Guimaraes - 7/10
Bruno Guimaraes had a decent showing in the center of the pitch. He won nine duels, made four recoveries, won one tackle, and was the most fouled player of the match (5). The Newcastle United star looked eager to get hold of the ball and was reliable when in possession.
Lucas Paqueta - 6/10
Lucas Paqueta seemed lost and was indecisive when in possession. He had too many thoughts running through his head and was slow in his execution for Brazil.
Raphinha - 6/10
Raphinha had his moments in the game but never looked consistent. He had a couple of chances in the opening half but looked like a ghost in the second as the Barcelona man was nowhere to be seen as he was hardly involved in any of the sequences.
Rodrygo - 7/10
Rodrygo tried to cover up for Vinicius Junior's absence, but it was not enough on the night. He won 10 duels, made two recoveries, completed two dribbles, and won one tackle throughout but could not produce the end result.
Endrick - 6/10
It was not a convincing showing from the Real Madrid forward. He was isolated higher up the pitch and was beaten for strength up front.
Substitutes
Andres Pereira - 6/10
Andres Pereira scored from the spot in the shootout, but apart from that, he had no time to make an impact.
Douglas Luiz - 4/10
Missed his penalty in the shootout.
Savio - 5/10
He did show some bursts of pace, but nothing more to it.
Evanilson - N/A
Made no impact on the game.
Gabriel Martinelli - 6/10
Tucked his penalty away in the shootout.
