Breaking: Everton sack Marco Silva

Everton have parted ways with manager Marco Silva, 18 months after he took charge of the Toffees. The club have endured a horrendous campaign thus far, winning only three of their last 10 encounters in all competitions.

As a result, they find themselves languishing in the relegation spots in the Premier League table, and Silva's inability to engineer a change in fortunes led to his eventual axing.

The Goodison Park outfit suffered an embarrassing 5-2 defeat in the Merseyside Derby against Liverpool last night, and Silva was seen slouching in his seat and cutting a forlorn figure on the touchline - it was almost as if he was foreboding what was about to come, and it did come this morning.

Silva arrived at Everton’s Finch Farm training complex and was putting the players through their paces per usual ahead of the weekend’s clash against Frank Lampard’s Chelsea.

A conference call involving the top brass of the club - majority owner Farhad Moshiri, chairman Bill Kenwright, chief executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale and director of football Marcel Brands, sealed the Portuguese tactician's fate

Moshiri flew into Liverpool to address the Everton players, who were instructed to stay back after training.

The owner and other members in the upper echelons of the club were convinced that the situation with Silva had become untenable and that it was in the best interest of the club to dispense with the Portuguese's services.

Former Toffees boss David Moyes is the favourite for the vacant managerial post, at least on a temporary basis.

Although, it’s believed that due to the initial fan backlash regarding Moyes' potential appointment, Everton have spoken to other candidates as well, and it’s unclear at the moment as to who they will finally zero-in on.

Meanwhile, Everton hero Duncan Ferguson will take charge of the team for the game against Chelsea at the weekend.
