Cahill frustrated, Cole embarrassed and Luiz apologizes after Super Cup defeat
Gary Cahill slammed Chelsea after a humiliating defeat at the hands of Athletico Madrid. The loss yesterday happened to be one of the biggest defeats the blues have suffered since their Russian owner took over. Chelsea were all over the place and wished they still had their bus with them.
We played below par. Today we fell to pieces,’ Cahill told Sky Sports.’We started the game sloppy and that went right through the game. If we’re honest with ourselves everyone was below par today and it was embarrassing at times.’We approach every game in the same way. It was a massive game tonight and we let ourselves down and passed up a great opportunity.’It is difficult. Obviously we will look to bounce back in the league as today was unacceptable.’
The game will be a reality check for Chelsea as they sit on top of the Premier League table with 9 points out of 9. It’s still early days but Roberto Di Matteo still has to go over his tactical setup once again to avoid any more blushes.
‘The first half we started very sloppy,’ Di Matteo said. ‘It was a slow start and if you give Falcao space he’s very dangerous and we should have blocked him before that.’We didn’t have much penetration. It went in their favour with the early goal and we found it difficult to find the space in the middle and tried to go our wide. ‘We were very defensive and they countered on us.’
With two hat tricks in a week, Radamel Falcao showed no mercy to the European Champions. Defenders Ashley Cole and David Luiz, who both had very poor games in Monaco , vented their disappointment and embarrassment on popular social networking site, Twitter.
Ashley Cole tweeted: ‘Wellll that was a lesson, absolute joke no fight, desire, passion, and a big reality check!!!!!! #sorrycfcfans.’
Fans who traveled to Monaco were left utterly disappointed by the standards of the Chelsea defense. David Luiz who particularly had a very bad game , went a step further and apologized to the fans.
The blues will be looking to bounce back soon and go through some serious changes in the way they play.
