Capital One Cup Highlights: Manchester City advance, Chelsea knocked out
Here is a round up of the quarter final fixtures played last night in the Capital One Cup.
Sunderland 2 – 1 Chelsea
The two Premier League clubs went loggerheads at the Stadium of Light, which turned out to be an epic. Chelsea fielded a largely second string side, as Jose Mourinho looked to rest his star players for the difficult Christmas period ahead. However, that back-fired, as Sunderland grabbed an unlikely victory against the quality of Chelsea.
The Blues went ahead, as a sumptuous cross delivered into the box by Cesar Azpilicueta was bundled in by Frank Lampard but was later deemed an own goal by Lee Cattermole. However, Fabio Borini rifled the ball into the bottom corner soon after, to bring the home side level. The match went into extra time, and Ki sung-Yueng grabbed a well finished 118th minute goal, to send Jose Mourinho and his team packing.
It was always going to be a tough ask for the Championship side to get a result against the almighty – Manchester City. The minnows were eventually outclassed on the day, as the Premier League giants cruised to a comfortable victory.
Serbian left-back Aleksander Kolarov opened to scoring with an absolute corker of a free-kick. Edin Dzeko grabbed a brace, as he staked a firm claim for a starting spot on the Manchester City first team, as star striker Sergio Aguero recovers from his injury. The Leicester side did manage a goal, albeit a consolation.
