Cech urges the team to create European history!

Petr Cech is often quoted in the media at different stages of a Chelsea season and especially ahead of big games or disappointing results. Today is no different as he has spoken before we take on FC Basel tonight and emphasised that although it’s been a tough season, it could end in success with the team creating history!

He said:

“It’s a semi-final of the Europa League, we would like to win it. We could be the first team in history to have won the Champions League and the Europa League back to back. That would be a great achievement. This is the aim. It would be another European trophy to put in the trophy room at Stamford Bridge, and I think it would be something we would be proud of, and it would make the season successful, and it would make the fans happy.

Obviously the Champions League is the Champions League, but this is another European cup. If you win the Europa League you can play the Super Cup again. We got it terribly wrong in the Super Cup last year and we would have another chance to win it.”

He’s right and it would be a great achievement when the dust on this season settles down. To win the Champions League and then the Europa League as back to back trophies would be amazing and of course we would all be happy but it still rates as second best for me.

I will be honest and will hold my hands up and admit that my opinion of the Europa League was that it is a nothing competition compared to the Champions League. I had thought that the fact that teams that perform badly in the group stages of the Champions League were then allowed to participate in the Europa League said it all and UEFA only do that to keep interest high in the competition.

Of course, the fact that this happened to Chelsea has made me see the competition differently and it’s now one I want to win this season. Compared to two weeks ago, I would have preferred to win the FA Cup and finish fourth as it means more to me than the Europa League.

But, in saying that, we are now in the semi final and a European semi final with a massive chance to win it and more importantly to qualify for the UEFA Super Cup and put right the wrongs of Monaco at the beginning of the season.

How do you feel about the competition now compared to previously now we are in it? Had you felt the same as me about it but your feelings have changed now we have a massive opportunity to win it?
