Champions League: Liverpool legend unhappy with final scheduling
What’s the story?
Jamie Carragher has heavily criticized the decision to schedule the finals of UEFA Champions League three weeks after the end of Premier League. Liverpool are set to take on Tottenham next weekend at Wanda Metropolitano in an all English UCL final.
The Reds legend believes that such a gap will benefit Tottenham as it gives them more time to get their injured players back onto the pitch.
In case you didn’t know...
Carragher was a part of the famous team that won Champions League in 2005 after beating AC Milan which the Liverpool fans also remember as 'The Miracle of Instanbul'.
The heart of the matter
The former Liverpool defender believes that the gap between the final league game week and the UEFA Champions League finals is absurd as he said:
"No-one's been able to give me a reason why the Champions League is three weeks after the league campaign".
"That's p***ed me off a little bit that to be honest. I think it probably helps Spurs more than us, I would say".
"I think they've got bigger injury problems than us, certainly with Harry Kane, Harry Winks, other little knocks they had towards the end of the season. It gives you an extra week to be fit".
"I think we're in much better form than Tottenham in 2019 and a longer break will not help that, really, in some ways".
"You do worry because you lose a bit of that rhythm that Liverpool have had the way they've been playing".
"I don't think Tottenham are in great form. I know they got through and it's unbelievable what they've done, I love Pochettino, but they're not in great form so a longer break will help them forget the bad form and focus on this one game".
He implied that the gap benefits Spurs as it increases the chances of Harry Kane and Harry Winks featuring in the finals. Moreover he thinks that Liverpool were in great rhythm and the gap only hampers it.
What's next?
Liverpool are aiming to win their sixth UCL title and after last year's heartbreak, they would be determined to not let it slip away this time.
