Champions League: Luis Suarez lauded for classy gesture after humiliating Liverpool defeat
What's the story?
Barcelona forward Luis Suarez has been lauded for his gesture after his side crashed out of the Champions League following a 4-0 defeat to former club Liverpool on Tuesday night.
In case you didn't know...
Barcelona squandered their three-goal lead in their semi-final fixture against Liverpool to help the Premier League outfit to their second consecutive European final.
The Reds did just fine in the absence of Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah as Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum stepped in to score a brace each, miraculously overturning their first-leg deficit.
Suarez, who scored during the first leg of the fixture at Camp Nou, did not have the most welcoming return to Anfield. The Uruguayan was on the receiving end of plenty of abuse from Liverpool fans with the crowd heard chanting, "Cheat, cheat, cheat" and "F*** off Suarez".
The former Liverpool star was subject to criticism from a section of fans and pundits after his wild goal celebrations against his former club at Barcelona last week.
The heart of the matter
Former LFCTV presenter Matthew Critchley has hailed Suarez for his actions after full-time and has pointed out that the Uruguayan remains a classy human being despite being at the center of controversy lately.
Speaking on BT Sport (via The Express), he said,
"A word on Suarez. Spent time in the tunnel after the game talking to former colleagues & friends. Congratulated them."
"Was a winner, pushing the boundaries at LFC. Still doing that now. Surprised anyone thought he’d do anything less than give everything & try anything to win tonight."
What's next?
While Barcelona have a Copa del Rey final against Valencia to look forward to this month, Liverpool are waiting to find out who will emerge as their final opponent between Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax.
