Reports: AC Milan superstar interested in joining Chelsea

Everton v Chelsea - Premier League
Antonio Conte is extremely keen for a reunion with his former player

What's the story?

It is common knowledge that Antonio Conte has not been happy with the transfer business conducted by Chelsea this season, but things might be looking up for the Italian as the Blues are increasingly looking like favourites to complete the signing of Italian international Leonardo Bonucci.

According to reports from Tribal Football, the former Juventus centre-back is desperate for a reunion with his former manager and has informed his current club AC Milan that he is looking for a move to Stamford Bridge.

When asked about Conte in an interview conducted in October, Bonucci even said:

“I have been coached by some great coaches. Each one of them has given me something but the best one and the manager that has given me the most is Conte. I could work every day with him and I have improved as a manager and as a human being."

Bonucci could be on his way to the Premier League

Although Bonucci made a slightly surprising move to AC Milan from Juventus only this summer, it is rumoured that the Milan captain has become disenchanted with life at San Siro and is keen on a move to Premier League side Chelsea.

The Italian giants have struggled this season and they could be looking to sell Bonucci and make a fresh signing to reinforce their porous defence.

The heart of the matter

With David Luiz all but frozen out of Chelsea, Antonio Conte is on the lookout for a quality and experienced defensive signing. The Blues have been linked with moves for both Alex Sandro and Bonucci, and Conte will be hoping that the board helps him gets the players he wants in the January transfer window.

Bonucci, on the other hand, was considered to be the best centre-back in the world last season. Excellent in defence and capable of setting up attacks from the back, the Italian centre-back will certainly make Chelsea's back-line one of the best (if not the best) in the league.

Author's take

Conte and Bonucci formed a formidable partnership at Juventus and the Chelsea manager will certainly be pleased if they manage to sign the Italian centre-back. With Cahill struggling and David Luiz seemingly frozen out, Bonucci will be the ideal signing for Chelsea in this January transfer window.
