Chelsea Transfer Rumour: Chelsea line up a bid for Sampdoria striker Luis Muriel
Chelsea have reportedly made a bid for Sampdoria striker Luis Muriel, as revealed by the president of the Italian club, Massimo Ferrero. However, the president has stated that the player is not available for a transfer, until and unless Chelsea offer a deal worth more than £30.5m.
Attracted interest from Europe’s best
Muriel was linked with a move to the Bridge last week by the Spanish media, as reports suggested that the player will be added as an additional support to Diego Costa in the front line. Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is reportedly an admirer of the Colombian striker, ever since his time in Italy, and Muriel is on his radar as an ideal player who would help his side gain more dominance on the field.

A product of Deportivo Cali, Muriel was considered to be one of the most promising players in world football, often gaining appreciation from the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, and Barcelona. The player joined Sampdoria in January 2015, from Udinese on a temporary basis, which included an obligation to buy for Sampdoria at the end of the season for €12m.
Strengths and weaknesses
A versatile player on the pitch, Muriel often plays as a second striker. However, his ability to play in the central role as an attacking midfielder as well as in the wider role makes him an advantageous addition to the squad. The player’s skill and playing style have often elicited comparisons to Brazilian legend Ronaldo. Muriel’s movement and technique on the ball make him a tough opponent. Good in dribbling, finishing as well as in key passes, the player does not back away from a challenge easily.
On the other hand, Muriel’s short stature makes him a weak player in the aerial department. In addition to this, the 25-year old’s defensive contributions are also a cause for concern. Muriel also suffers from weight issues and struggles to maintain fitness.
Part of the golden generation
The Colombian is considered to be a member of the current golden generation of Colombia alongside the likes of Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez. Muriel became a full international in 2012 when he made his senior debut in the World Cup qualifying match against Ecuador.
The 25-year-old striker has scored 14 goals for Sampdoria since joining the Serie A club in January 2015, which also includes four goals scored this season. Muriel is in contract with the club till 2019 but does have a release clause of £30.5m.
