Chelsea, Liverpool lose as the Manchester City juggernaut rolls on in the Premier League
Manchester City continued in their winning ways playing at home against Watford to keep their 100% win record so far this season. Other top sides playing on the day, Chelsea and Liverpool failed to even register a point despite playing at home as well, losing to Crystal Palace and West ham respectively. The league also saw 5 red cards dished out in only 3 of the 5 games, one came as Mitrovic was sent off against Arsenal, but the Potters received 2 and both Liverpool and West Ham had a man sent off each.
Another Saturday in the Premier League bringing more action as the 4th week of league games rolled in. As Arsenal raked in three points in the early kickoff against Newcastle, it laid the marker down for the rest of the top sides to respond. But as was evident, not everyone was up to the task.
Meanwhile, elsewhere, Bournemouth who registered their first win in the Premier League last week were held at home by Leicester. Aston Villa and Leicester City played out another draw at Villa Park, while Tony Pulis’ West Brom came out victors at Britannia stadium against a 9-man Stoke City.
Manchester City 2-0 Watford
MCFC: Sterling, Fernandinho
Pellegrini’s men began their game on the backfoot as Watford had all the early initiative but couldn’t capitalise on it. Vincent Kompany and co gradually found their feet and started to pose a threat to Watford’s goal towards the end of the first half. They began the second half in the same vein and it paid off as Raheem Sterling scored from their first attack and Fernandinho would go on to double their lead banging in a scorcher after being fed in by David Silva.
The clean sheet is the fourth they have kept this season in as many games, while the win also extends their run of victories to 10 in all league games. They are sitting pretty at the top of the table early on and no one looks like threatening them at the moment.
Bournemouth 1-1 Leicester City
AFCB: Wilson, LCFC: (pen) Vardy
The newly promoted side who have been praised for their flowing, attacking football were at it again but only had a goal to show for it. New recruit Max Gradel combined with last week’s hattrick hero Calum Wilson whose bicycle kick put Eddie Howe’s men ahead early on. The fairytale was not to be as they were denied a win by Leicester City when their forward Jamie Vardy was brought down in the box and he put the ball in the net himself from the resulting penalty.
Aston Villa 2-2 Sunderland
AVFC: Sinclair [2], SUN: M’Vila, Lens
A see-saw that saw Sunderland take the lead early on and Villa come back through Sinclair to equalise and then take the lead. But the Black Cats were not to be stifled even playing away from home. They drew level through Lens later on but both teams did not have enough in their tank to launch a bid for the win.
Stoke City 0-1 West Brom
WBA: Rondon
A bit of squabble in this one as both Ibrahim Affelay and Charlie Adam were both sent off in the first half. The Dutch winger was pulled up for appearing to slap another player while the Scot was given his marching orders for seemingly stamping another. West Brom would later take the lead as Rickie Lambert’s long ball forward found Rondon's head who guided it past Jack Butland.
Chelsea 1-2 Crystal Palace
CFC: Falcao, CPFC: Sako, Dann
The Champions were humbled by Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace in Jose Mourinho’s 200th Premier League game incharge and the 100th one at home. All three goals coming towards the end of the game. The Eagles put in a determined performance, not allowing Chelsea to penetrate and looking dangerous on the ball, the breakthrough for them came when Bolasie came on and within his first few minutes on the ball he pulled it back for an oncoming Bakary Sako from the right and their new recruit was not to miss the opportunity to beat Courtois.
Chelsea would find a leveller through Radamel Falcao who had also come on to replace Willian after Palace’s first goal, but the lead barely lasted more than 2 minutes when Danny Ward would once again restore the visitor’s lead. A poor start to the season has left Chelsea in 13th place with only 4 points in 4 games.
Liverpool 0-3 West Ham
WHU: Lanzini, Noble, Sakho
The game started terribly for the Reds as Argentinian Manuel Lanzini was on target early for the Hammers. Slaven Bilic's men would then capitalise on an error from Dejan Lovren as Noble put the ball past Mignolet. Rodgers would have had to give a pretty inspiring teamtalk at half-time to inspire a reversal of fortunes, but it was not to be as Philippe Coutinho would be sent off for receiving 2 yellow cards, one in the first half and the other in the second.
Then it was Mark Noble's turn to see red for West Ham for a lunge into a tackle, following which a 10 man West Ham would score against a 10 man Liverpool through Diafra Sakho.
Tottenham 0-0 Everton
A game that produced more injuries than anything else saw Moussa Dembele stretchered off for Tottenham and Everton lost Tom Cleverley to an ankle injury. Despite a few chances created on either side, Tim Howard was by far the busier goalkeeper. He was up to the task as well, denying Tottenham what could have been over 3 goals. The best chance falling to Harry Kane who was clear through on goal but his shot was saved by Howard who cloased him down quickly.
