Chelsea pip Arsenal to sign teen sensation Luke Shaw
Chelsea sees Luke Shaw as probable successor to Ashley Cole as their first-choice left back after re-opening talks for a potential summer transfer. There were reports that the Blues had made a £10 million bid for the England Under -21 defender but Southampton rejected it in January.
However, talks over a big-money move for Shaw refuses to die down, with Chelsea increasingly certain of bagging the highly rated 17-year-old.
Despite the insecurity surrounding the manager in charge – Rafael Benitez – at Stamford Bridge next season, Shaw remains a top target.
Cole, having signed a 12-month extension to his contract, has his position as Chelsea’s number one left back secured for the next season.
But Chelsea are keen to complete a deal for Shaw this summer transfer window with the option to loan Shaw back to Southampton next season.
Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and his leading chief scout Steve Rowley have also identified Shaw as a priority signing; but Chelsea are firmly in driver’s seat to sign the defender, who is tipped to become a future England left-back.
