Chile move into top 10 of FIFA Rankings, Germany slip to third
The latest World FIFA Rankings were released by FIFA today and World champions Germany have now slipped to third spot. Copa America finalists Argentina still lead the table with 1473 points, but Belgium are now in second place with 1244 points while Germany have 1226 points.
After their Copa America win, Chile have climbed up the table and are now in the Top 10 with 1124 points. Wales have continued their phenomenal rise and move one spot up to ninth with 1155 points – just one spot behind rivals England who are eighth with 1157 points. This is Wales’ highest-ever position in the FIFA World Rankings.
Netherlands saw the biggest fall in the rankings as they fell 7 spots to 12th with a total of 1032 points. The reason for Germany and Netherlands falling in the rankings is because the World Cup matches are no longer considered as the rankings are calculated for matches played over the last 12 months only.
Meanwhile, CONCACAF Gold Cup winners Mexico moved up 14 spots to 26th in the FIFA Rankings while Jamaica (who also played at the Copa America) moved up 21 spots to 55th. Other notable countries who reached their highest ever rankings include Austria in 14th spot with 1016 points – tied with Slovakia.
European countries still dominate the rankings with 31 UEFA members in the top 50. They are followed by CONMEBOL who have eight teams. They are tied with CAF who also have eight teams.
There were a total of 29 international matches played last month of which only three were friendly matches while the rest of the games were played in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The rankings will next be updated in the first week of September.
