EPL 2016/17: Christian Eriksen does not regret rejecting Chelsea over Ajax

Eriksen joined Tottenham in 2013

Tottenham Hotspur's midfield star Christian Eriksen has revealed that he does not regret his decision to not join Chelsea FC.

The Danish footballer was scouted by a number big European clubs including AC Milan, Barcelona, and Chelsea during his teen years, but the then 16-year-old decided to join Dutch football club Ajax instead, feeling that it was the best club to develop as a footballer.

"In Denmark, you are sure to play if you were good, but Ajax played you if you did not have the mentality and went 100% to it," told the Tottenham midfielder to Fyens in Denmark.

"It did not matter who you were. It was about getting better every day.”

The 24-year-old believes that if he had joined Chelsea instead of Ajax, the chances of failing was more likely than succeeding at that level.

"If I had chosen Chelsea, then my situation today would be completely different. I'm sure. Of course, you never say never, because I would have been 100% into it, if I had chosen it. I just felt that there was more chance to fail than succeed."

Christian Eriksen’s agent, Martin Schoots stated earlier this year that the Danish midfielder was never really motivated by the money factor, despite many big European clubs offering him lucrative deals that could have made the 24-year-old a very wealthy man.

"The only thing that I can say is that if money were the most important thing, Christian would not have gone to Ajax at the first place," the Tottenham player’s agent said.

"At the time he was 16, we were in contact with clubs like Barcelona, Chelsea and AC Milan.”

Christian Eriksen recently extended his contract with FC Tottenham Hotspur, which will see the Dane remain at the London-based club until the year 2020. The Danish international also declared his ambitions with the club by saying that his future at the club looks bright and that he wouldn’t have signed the contract if he hadn’t felt so.

"And if money were the most important thing, he wouldn't have joined Tottenham three years ago. He had interest from some of the richest clubs in the world. But Tottenham was the only club he wanted to join, and he is happy."

After joining Tottenham Hotspur from Ajax in 2013, Eriksen has made 105 appearances for the club contributing 23 goals and 26 assists in the English Premier League .
