Copa America 2016, Golden Glove: List of goalkeepers with highest clean sheets
The 2016 Copa America Centenario in the United States promises to be a feast for football fans across the globe. For the first time, the Copa America is being hosted by USA and is a celebration of the competition’s centenary.
The Copa America has seen a number of famous goalkeepers over the years. Goalkeepers like Claudio Taffarel, Rene Higuita and Dida have stood strong between the sticks for their nations. The eccentric Higuita revolutionized goalkeeping by often coming out of his box and playing like an outfield player. He even took free-kicks sometimes.
However, goalkeepers are judged by how safe they are between the posts and the number of clean sheets he has. South American goalkeepers have often received criticism for not being disciplined enough, and in spite of being outstanding shot-stoppers, they often seem too eager in the penalty box.
Sergio Romero of Argentina has the most active clean sheets among the active goalkeepers in this year’s Copa America with 6.
Chilean Claudio Bravo and Sergio Romero jointly finished at the top in the list for most clean in last year’s Copa America with 4 clean sheets.
With fierce attackers in Sergio Aguero, Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Alexis Sanchez among others, who will look to score aplenty in this year's Copa, the goalkeepers will have their work cut out. Barcelona goalie Claudio Bravo will be looking to defend his Copa America title by guiding Chile to the trophy. Other notable goalkeepers taking part in the tournament and looking to win the Copa for their nation include Sergio Romero of Argentina, David Ospina of Colombia, and veteran Brad Guzan of the United States.
