'Coutinho would never be welcomed back at Liverpool', says former Reds midfielder
What's the story?
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy is of the opinion that Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho would never be welcomed back at Anfield following his big money move to the La Liga giants last year.
In case you didn't know...
Coutinho left Liverpool for Barcelona in a €160 million transfer in January last year after the Brazilian requested to join the Catalan giants the previous summer. The record move came with huge expectations for the playmaker who made his mark in the Premier League.
Despite having made some impact in his initial months at Camp Nou, the Brazilian has failed to replicate his Liverpool form and is struggling to even get on the team sheet recently.
The former Reds star, whose contract with Barcelona expires in 2023, has been linked with a return to the English top flight with clubs like Chelsea and Liverpool all being reported to have an interest in the Brazilian.
The heart of the matter
Murphy has reiterated Jurgen Klopp's opinion in saying that Liverpool are not likely to sign Coutinho again and that fans at Anfield would not welcome him back even if it happened.
Speaking to Sportingbet, the former Liverpool star said, "Coutinho would never be welcomed back at Liverpool."
"It hasn’t worked out for him at Barcelona, but he made his bed by declaring how much he wanted to leave and now he has to sleep in it."
"I think even if Liverpool thought it was something they wanted, the fans would make it perfectly clear it wasn’t acceptable and would force them to pull the plug."
"The fans didn’t necessarily begrudge him his move to Barcelona, but he left himself no way to come back."
What's next?
While Liverpool will next face Watford in the Premier League, while Barcelona are scheduled to lock horns with Real Madrid in a much-awaited Copa del Rey Clasico tomorrow night.
