Video: Coventry City's outrageous free kick goal against Everton

The goal that stunned the football world

One of the most unusual free kick drills was executed to perfection back in 1970 when Coventry City beat Everton FC 3-1 in an English League game. And it has been labelled as one of English football’s greatest goals.

And the masterminds behind this historic move were Willier Carr and Ernie Hunt. Hunt, who was ironically an Everton player, became the man who re-wrote football rule books after he volleyed home a free kick that was initiated by Carr, who gripped the ball between his heels and flicked it for Hunt to score thus executing a one of a kind goal.

The goal stunned the attending crowd and everyone was awed by this audacious move by the duo. BBC televised this match on their football programme Match of the Day following which the goal gained a lot of mainstream attention and cause a worldwide stir. Eventually, the move was officially outlawed by the authorities.

33 years later since scoring the goal, Hunt event sold his boots for £500 to the Quadrant Club in Coventry.
