Cristiane sets goal record as Brazil hit five
CARDIFF (AFP) –
Brazil striker Cristiane became the most successful goalscorer in Olympic women’s football history on Wednesday as the South Americans opened their 2012 campaign with a 5-0 thumping of Cameroon.
Cristiane grabbed the fourth goal late in the second half at the Millennium Stadium.
It was her 11th Olympic goal, meaning she is now the all-time leading scorer in women’s Olympic football, overtaking Birgit Prinz of Germany.
Goals from Francielle and Renata Costa had put the South Americans, seeking their first Olympic title, 2-0 up in the first 10 minutes as Cameroon, making their debut, were outclassed, failing to trouble Brazil goalkeeper Andreia.
Star striker Marta scored a third goal for the Samba Queens in the 73rd minute from the penalty spot before substitute Cristiane added her record-breaking goal five minutes later, after going around goalkeeper Annette Ngo Ndom.
Marta completed Brazil’s victory on 88 minutes by tapping the ball into an empty net after Cristiane had beaten Ngo Ndom with an accurate cross.
