Cristiano Ronaldo News: Rape lawsuit against Portuguese skipper dropped by the accuser
What's the story?
The rape lawsuit filed against Portuguese skipper Cristiano Ronaldo has been dropped by the accuser, as per reports from the United States via FoxSportsAsia.
In case you didn't know...
Last year, the Juventus forward was accused of raping a woman named Katheryn Mayorga. She sued the 34-year-old, accusing him of a sexual assault that allegedly happened in 2009 in a hotel in Las Vegas.
The New York Times reported in March that Juventus are reluctant to participate in the International Champions Cup set to be played in the United States this summer. The report suggested that the Italian champions wanted to avoid the risk of their number 7 being detained by the US authorities.
Las Vegas Police Department issued a warrant, asking for a DNA sample from the former Real Madrid star as part of their investigation into the rape allegations made against him.
However, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner had denied the allegations publically and gave no legal retaliation to Katheryn Mayorga.
The heart of the matter
Fresh reports from the United States suggest that a notice of voluntary dismissal was filed in the Nevada state court in Las Vegas, last month.
However, the notice didn't mention whether the accuser has reached a settlement with the Portuguese winger.
Lawyers from both parties and the Las Vegas police have refused to comment on the investigation of the case.
Despite being accused of severe charges in the US, Ronaldo had a fantastic season on the pitch in his first season in Italy. The left-winger helped Juventus win their eight successive Serie A title; scoring 21 goals and setting up another 8. He led the Bianconerri to the Champions League quarter-finals, though, they failed to get past Ajax Amsterdam.
Currently, Ronaldo is preparing for Portugal's UEFA Nations League clash against Switzerland.
What's next?
It remains to be seen how Cristiano Ronaldo or his lawyer will respond after the lawsuit against the Portuguese footballer was voluntarily dropped.
