David Luiz: Playing a wrong role?
The season has gotten off to a good start for Chelsea in many aspects. Hazard and Oscar are playing brilliantly. So are Juan Mata and Victor Moses. If there is one thing that hasn’t clicked for us this season, it’s the defence. And particularly the centre-back position. The full back positions look well-secured, with Cole and Ivanovic pulling off great performances. But the centre-back position, with Terry and Luiz regulars, looks insecure.
While Terry seems to be making some mistakes, he certainly proves his worth with equally excellent performances sometimes. Also, his mistakes too are very quickly rectified. The main problem we face is Luiz donning the CB position.
Luiz is a natural ball-player. When he gets the ball, he tends to run with it and put in crosses. But what he does not understand is that we already have the full backs and wingers to do that. And after he goes on his attacking runs, he forgets to come back to his original position, thus leaving a gaping hole in the defence, through which our opponents operate easily and score.
So,the obvious solution would be to place Cahill in the CB position alongside Terry. But Di Matteo seems to have a dilemma in this decision, because both Luiz and Cahill start alternate matches.
Cahill, however, is the perfect CB. With the talent to score, and also the ability to defend excellently, he’s a great player. With him and Terry at CB, and Cole and Ivanovic as full backs, our defence will look a lot more better.
But what will Luiz do? His ability to run fast players, put in some good crosses and make attacking runs make him a good winger. But with the 4-2-3-1, which incorporates two central midfielders and three attacking ones, Luiz will be out of place. So, to make best use of our squad, which has an exceptionally strong midfield, I feel that Di Matteo will have to use the 4-5-1.
Yes, it may seem insane. Luiz as a winger, you may ask. But he may be apt for that position. And with him as winger, and Cahill as a centre-half, along with the 4-5-1 formation, we have a strong team, which is good in both defence and offence.
This formation can be used against Wolves in the Capital One Cup. There is no chance of conceding a goal with this formation, which has a defensive midfielder and four defenders. With the Arsenal match around the corner, we must do something to rehabilitate the team.
The 4-2-3-1 simply does not showcase our offensive strength and it also weakens our defence if Cahill does not play. And there is also the added advantage of Torres being the lone striker. He revels in that position. And with Hazard and Luiz to supply crosses, Torres may even begin to show his Liverpool form!
KTBFFH!!
