Diego Simeone's son claims his father could join Inter Milan
Diego Simeone’s son Giovanni Simeone has further fuelled rumours about his father’s future by claiming that the Argentine will definitely manage his former club Inter Milan at some time in the future. Speaking to Spanish media outlet Onda Cero, the Genoa striker said he hopes his father, who had claimed in April that he would return to his former club one day, will follow up on his vision and makes the dream move to Inter Milan in a managerial role.
"I think that at some stage my father will sign for Inter. At least I really hope he does. He is happy at Atletico Madrid, from what I can see, but maybe in future, it could happen," said the 21-year-old striker who is spending his first season in Europe as a professional footballer.
Simeone senior was a midfielder by trade, spent 2 successful seasons at the San Siro between 1997 and 1999, where he helped them achieve UEFA Cup success in the 1997-98 season and has since expressed his love for the Italian club. And given his managerial record thus far, Inter Milan hierarchy would like to have him manage the resources at the club to bring back the club’s glorious years.
Simeone, who had a career that saw him play in Argentina, Spain and Italy was renowned for the energy that he brought to the midfield and is currently renowned for his tactical yet energetic performances in the technical areas besides the pitch.
He has had a rather successful time at Atletico Madrid, winning the La Liga title, the Copa Del Ray title, UEFA Europa League and also leading his side to 2 UEFA Champions League finals and in the process has made Atletico Madrid one of the elite footballing clubs on the globe.
However, the start of the current season has not gone as per plan for the Argentine, as his side currently sit in the 4th spot in the La Liga.
Nine points adrift of the leaders Real Madrid, and there have been various rumours linking him away from the club since last season’s Champions League final when he lost for a second time to the cross-town rivals Real Madrid.
The manager was believed to be distraught with the result and had requested for his original contract with Atletico, which was set to expire in 2020, to be shortened by two years, which was obliged by the club.
Perhaps, a move to Italy, where he previously managed Catania for a short time, could prove to be the right move to reignite the manager’s career, which many believe might be stagnating at Atletico Madrid. Inter, on the other hand, have now gone five seasons without qualifying for the Champions League and have been on the lookout for the right person to turn things around for good and Simeone could be the missing piece to the puzzle for the Italian giants.
