EFL Cup quarterfinals draw announced

Manchester United got the better of rivals City in the round of 16 of EFL Cup

The EFL Cup is down to the last eight teams and the draw for the quarter-finals has thrown up interesting matches  

The last eight teams consist of just two Championship teams while the other six are Premier League teams. The biggest elimination happened with Manchester City’s 1-0 loss to Jose Mourinho's Manchester United, with the Portuguese manager avenging United’s 2-1 loss to City in the league.

Manchester United overcame City's challenge thanks to a Juan Mata goal in the second half from a Zlatan Ibrahimovic cross. The victory means that the Red Devils will next face West Ham at home in the next round.

United needed that victory against their arch-rivals after a disappointing few weeks, and their slender 1-0 win would certainly up the morale of the team.

West Ham were the better team against Chelsea in the other EFL Cup round of 16 game, with the Hammers defeating the Blues 2-1 at home courtesy of goals from Cheikhou Kouyate and youngster Edimilson Fernandes.

The London derby was marred by violence in the stands in West Ham’s Olympic Stadium. Chelsea scored through Gary Cahill but it was too little, too late as the Hammers progressed to the next round, and have an away encounter with Manchester United.

Liverpool booked their quarter-finals berth with a 2-1 victory over Spurs and will now have a home encounter with Sky Bet Championship club, Leeds United.

The Reds won against Pochettino's men thanks to a brace from Daniel Sturridge, whereas Leeds beat fellow championship club, Norwich City, on penalties. The game ended 2-2 in the stipulated time and Leeds won the game with the last penalty kick to send them into the quarters.

Sturridge scored a brace in the EFL Cup tie against Tottenham

Hull City won an away game against Bristol City 2-1 and have a home tie against Newcastle United in the quarters. The Magpies arrived in the quarters courtesy of a 6-0 mauling of Preston North End. Mohammed Diame and Ayoze Perez both scored a brace to send Rafael Benitez's side into the last eight.

Arsenal overcame Reading's challenge with a 2-0 win over them thanks to an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain double and now face another home tie against Southampton.

The Saints beat Sunderland 1-0 as Sofiane Boufal scored a wonderful winner for Claude Puel's side.
