EPL 2016/17: Manchester United should recall Bastian Schweinsteiger, says Manuel Neuer

Neuer and Schweinsteiger played together in the German national team and Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich and German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has asked Manchester United and Jose Mourinho to consider reinstating German Bastian Schweinsteiger back into the United first team squad.

The German says United should look to Schweinsteiger to add experience and balance in central midfield. Schweinsteiger has been left out of the United set-up and ordered to train with the reserves, despite declaring himself fit and ready for the start of the campaign.

Feel sorry for the way he’s treated, says Neuer

Speaking at a news conference in Munich, Neuer said, "You almost have to really feel sorry for him the way he's been treated at the start. I really hope that Basti will be picked. We all know that he's undeniably one of the best midfielders in the world.

"Therefore, he should be playing on the pitch for a side like Manchester United, not on an amateur pitch nor training on his own."

The German midfielder, who has won 8 league titles, 1 Champions League, a World Cup and numerous other cups, might be forgotten by the United hierarchy, but remains one of the best midfielders in the world, according to his former teammate and fellow World Cup winner Manuel Neuer.

The goalkeeper has said that the situation was difficult to judge from Munich but believes Schweinsteiger has knuckled down in training and is working hard towards proving the Portuguese manager wrong for leaving him out of the squad.

Still no signs of a way back to the team

Mourinho, in a news conference earlier this season, claimed that it would be hard for the German to break into the team as he’s fifth in line to play in his preferred central midfield role.

The German is in the United squad for the Premier League campaign but didn’t make the squad for the Europa League. He last started a game for United in the 1-0 win over City in March, before injuries hampered the rest of the season.

Schweinsteiger retired from international football in September and was also written off as an asset on United’s books for £6.7 million even though his contract runs till 2018. However, the German responded to those reports by stating that Manchester United would be his last club in Europe.

The German has received support from former German teammates, officials, and players, who have sympathised with his impending situation at Old Trafford. Schweinsteiger has remained professional and has not thrown his toys out of the pram, still urging his teammates and the club to do well through social media constantly.
