EPL Team of the Week: Gameweek 19

GOALKEEPER

The upset of the weekend came in the North-East as Sunderland beat Manchester City while holding them scoreless. The feat was achieved courtesy of a terrific display from their custodian between the sticks  Simon Mignolet.

Honourable Mention: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa)

DEFENDERS

Chelsea‘s Branislav Ivanovic and Norwich’s Michael Turner get the nod for the position at the centre of the defence as both playing in the same game put forth excellent performances on opposite sides of the field. The Serbian has again been showing his adaptability as he has been outstanding at the heart of the defence. Turner on the other hand kept Torres locked down for the entirety of the game as he again gave a display of the stingy defence that Norwich have been known for this season.

Danny Rose has been really impressive this season at loan to Sunderland from Spurs. His performance against City just typified what he has been this season. Solid and pacy.

The spot on the right hand side of the defence beongs to another Spurs man, Kyle Walker who put forth another solid display at the back while making his speed count time and again down the flanks.

Honourable Mentions: Gary Cahill(Chelsea),Patrice Evra (Manchester United), Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea)

MIDFIELDERS

Gareth Bale stole the show this midweek as he romped home a hat-trick against the hapless Villans on road to Spurs’ biggest win under AVB. The star of the gameweek and a deserved place in the team.

David Luiz finally seemed to have found a niche at the middle of the park. His defensive skills along with his nifty passing and footwork has landed him at the heart of the engine where he performed admirably against the Canaries.

Adam Johnson came back to haunt his old team as his goal secured all three points for Sunderland while Jonathan Walters‘ brace helped Stoke trounce Liverpool at the Britannia. The final spot of the midfield goes to Youssouf Mulumbu of West Brom who was spot on with his tackling and distribution at the heart of the midfield to see the Baggies return to winning ways against struggling QPR.

Honourable Mentions: Juan Mata (Chelsea), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham), Michu (Swansea)

FORWARDS

There was only one performance worthy of inclusion into this week’s team that came from a front man and that man was to no one’s surprise Robin van Persie. The Dutchman scored again and set up one as the Red Devils came away with the winner in a 7 goal thriller against Newcastle to set up a 7 point lead at the top.

Honourable Mention: Kenwyn Jones (Stoke City)
