Euro 2016: Andre Gomes says Portugal were expecting more from Cristiano Ronaldo

Andre Gomes and Cristiano Ronaldo are currently representing Portugal at the Euros.

Andre Gomes of Portugal has made a shocking revelation that the Portuguese side were expecting much better performances from the Real Madrid talisman at the 2016 Euros, although he did back his captain’s positive impact on the team.

Cristiano Ronaldo broke a European Championship record when he scored in his fourth Euro Championship after he scored two goals in a scintillating 3-3 draw to avoid an exit from the group stages of the 2016 Euro.

The all-time top scorer of Real Madrid scored a paltry two goals in five games, in which he scored in just one match. He has failed to score a goal in four matches of the championship and he missed a penalty in the process too.

The Portuguese midfielder said: "It is not the time to talk about individuals. Cristiano works for the team which is the most important thing. There are 23 players here." He added: "He's scored two goals - we were probably expecting more, it is true."

The Valencia man believes that Portugal will use their ‘weapons’ to reach the final by saying: “I know Gareth Bale from the Spanish league.” He added: “I also played against British teams in the past, so I know their way to play, their style.”

He continued: "They are very strong physically, they've got a very good team. We are preparing to face a very strong Wales team. They attack very well. I think they counter-attack very well as well.” He further added: “But we will use our weapons the best way we can to beat them on Wednesday.”

Renato Sanches has proved to be a winner for Portugal after he inspired his team to victory against Croatia, and against Poland where he scored. What’s interesting is that the new Bayern Munich midfielder was not supposed to be a part of the squad, but was added after injuries were sustained to Bernardo Silva.

On his teammate’s performance said: "This is not the time to put pressure on a player and put him in doubt." He said: "He has shown his quality and is working for the team and helping out in the Euros."

Ronaldo will be facing his Real Madrid teammate Gareth Bale when Portugal take on Wales on Wednesday. Interestingly, Portugal are yet to win a single game in normal time in the Euros.
