Euro 2016 qualifiers: Portugal 1-0 Armenia - Cristiano Ronaldo to the rescue again

Cristiano Ronaldo Pepe and Eder celebrate after scoring against Armenia

Cristiano Ronaldo saved a mediocre Portugal side’s blushes again as his late winner helped them to a 1-0 win over Armenia.

The Real Madrid forward scored his 23rd goal which saw him overtake John Dahl Tomasson and Hakan Sukur as he became the all-time leading scorer in European Championship qualification and finals combined. It was his 25th goal of the season for both club and country and a very important one that rescued his side from coming out with an embarrassing draw.

The Seleccao enjoyed possession for most parts of the game but failed to create any openings against an adamant Armenia side who were difficult to breakdown.

But the winner came eventually from their captain and talismanic attacker Ronaldo who slotted in the winner at the 72nd minute after he forced the ball over the line at the second attempt.

The result leaves Portugal second in Group I, occupying an automatic qualification spot, one point behind Denmark.

Here is the goal.
